Auckland Grammar School students Steven Ma has some interesting hobbies including performing in a diabolo group. He will be travelling to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Hey, I’m Steven and I’ve just been selected to represent New Zealand at the International Chemistry Olympiad held between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. With 2018 being the 50th anniversary of the International Chemistry Olympiad, it makes it even more special. I’m honoured to be part of the team and excited to be traveling to Europe for the first time.
Rides at MOTAT sparked my interest in science. This excitement quickly matured into intellectual curiosity. It ranged from watching videos of francium blowing up to fitting a headphone jack in an iPhone 7. But interests are dynamic and I have recently been more concerned about different foods and how it affects the body. It is the variety of scientific fields out there that excites me.
I’m currently attending Auckland Grammar School as a year 13 student. Other than science, I love tramping and play badminton at a competitive level. I also perform in a diabolo group, a circus prop derived from an axel and two cups. Most people think of it as a toy, but mastery of it can lead to some spectacular performances.
As for the future, I am mostly undecided, as all fields of science are equally exciting to me.
