7 August 1932 — 11 July 2013

In 1954, at the outset of my post-graduate experience in the Department of Chemistry in Edinburgh…I was introduced to carbohydrate chemistry, and with amazing lack of imagination I have never strayed too far from the subject since – but it has taken me to some undreamed of areas of chemistry and also of the world.”

Robin Ferrier c. 2000

Robin Ferrier is honoured as the grandfather of carbohydrate chemistry in New Zealand. Three of his PhD student ‘children’, Regine Blattner, Peter Tyler and the author (RHF) were founding members of the 30-strong world class applied carbohydrate chemistry group at Industrial Research Limited (now Callaghan Innovation). Other ‘children’ have made significant contributions in industry, Crown Research Institutes and Ministries in New Zealand and overseas.

Robin was born in Edinburgh and attended George Heriot’s School. He described his discovery of organic chemistry as a 17-year-old schoolboy as a major piece of good fortune, and he immediately recognised it as the subject he wanted to pursue. He attended the University of Edinburgh and gained a Bachelor of Science with first class honours in 1954 and a PhD in plant polysaccharides in 1957, under Professor Gerald Aspinall.

Appointed to a teaching position at Birkbeck College, University of London, Robin’s focus turned from polysaccharides to monosaccharides. New laboratory tools and methods enabled their reactions and mechanisms to be studied like normal organic compounds, rather than a separate field, and Robin was a pioneer in this approach.

In 1962 he took up a position as a NATO Post Doctoral Fellow in Professor Melvin Calvin’s group at the University of California, Berkeley. The change of country and lifestyle had a significant impact on him in a number of respects. While at Berkeley, Calvin was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on the Calvin cycle, and from then on Robin enjoyed the speculation about potential nominees and the announcement of Nobel Prize recipients with enthusiasm. He also discovered a love of fresh fruit, which continued throughout his life.

More significantly, he met his US-born wife Carolyn Tompkins at International House, the student hostel where they were both living and where she was the in-house nurse.

The pair married in Edinburgh on 25 July 1962. Their first child, Alison, was born in 1964 and their son Duncan in 1968, both in London.

Ferrier spent a short time in Nigeria in 1966, teaching chemistry at the University of Ife. Another memorable visit, also sponsored by the British Council, was to Russia for a two-week stay in Professor Nicolai Kochetkov’s Moscow lab in 1968, where Ferrier carried out some early mass spectrometry work.

A desire to progress his career and give his family a better quality of life led to his decision to move to New Zealand. He was appointed Victoria University’s first Chair of Organic Chemistry in 1970.

Robin continued to lead work on the monosaccharides, specialising in their use as starting materials for the synthesis of non-carbohydrate compounds of pharmaceutical interest. He had previously clarified the mechanism of the Fischer glycosidation and discovered an allylic rearrangement reaction of glycals, now known as the Ferrier rearrangement.

Many of Robin’s best discoveries were made by following up unexpected chemical observations, which often led him into uncharted territory. His second ‘name’ reaction, the Ferrier carbocyclisation, was the result of this approach. While on sabbatical leave in 1984 as a Royal Society Research Fellow at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, he set up a reaction to run overnight and the next morning found his reaction flask full of a crystalline product, but not the one he expected. Upon investigation, he found he had discovered a new carbon-carbon bond forming reaction that allowed cyclitols to be made from free sugars – something nature does but chemists had struggled to achieve. The related Petasis-Ferrier rearrangement, a Lewis acid-catalysed carbon-carbon bond forming cyclisation reaction is also named in his honour.

The Ferrier reactions have become useful tools for chemists, in their work of piecing together synthetic routes to complex molecules for research and industry. Robin himself would never refer to the reactions using his own name however – he believed that would have been boastful.

At Victoria, Robin supervised 10 successful PhD students, many of whom went on to make significant contributions in New Zealand and overseas. He had high expectations for their progress and a rigour that demanded all experimental results be fully validated before they could be believed. His firm approach was softened by a quick wit and mischievous sense of humour.

Due to funding restraints and the isolation of New Zealand at the time, many of the chemical reagents used in his lab, which would nowadays be purchased, were made by the students themselves. This led to a deeper appreciation of their origins and properties. His PhD students recall with some fear, the sound of his footsteps coming down the long Easterfield third floor corridor each evening for an update on the day’s progress. A visit was particularly terrifying if the day had been frittered away, but wonderful if there was a sniff of new knowledge or a problem to be solved – student and teacher went straight to the chalkboard for an inspirational discourse.

Robin also found opportunities where his chemistry could serve the nation. Notable were his service on the Toxic Substances Board in the 1980s and the leadership of the Royal Society of New Zealand report Lead in the Environment that in 1986 confirmed the toxic effects of lead and began the phase-out of leaded petrol in this country.

In other applied work, he and Regine Blattner created a model system (the oxidation of cellobiitol) that elucidated the chemical reactions that cause nail sickness – an iron catalysed oxidative degradation of the cellulosic component of wood. With Anton Erasmuson, he made haptens based on synthetic fragments of the fungal toxophore, sporodesmin, that were used in attempts to create a vaccine against facial eczema in sheep.

Robin also conducted model studies that elucidated the mechanisms involved in a high temperature and pressure biomass liquefaction process with Wayne Severn. With Anna-Karin Tidèn he made the cyclitolamine moiety required for a 23-step total synthesis of the insecticidal natural product allosamidin, which is still highly sought after as an insecticidal standard.

In his 50-year career, Robin published 180 papers, reviews and books, and gave 10 invited plenary lectures at international symposia. His reviews, notably as Senior Reporter for the Specialist Periodical Report Carbohydrate Chemistry published annually by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) from 1966 to 2000, were of particular benefit to the chemical community. Perhaps the most valuable of these contributions was the book Monosaccharide Chemistry written with Dr Peter Collins in 1972 and majorly updated as Monosaccharides: Their chemistry and their roles in natural products in 1995.

Robin was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (1977) and the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (1972) and awarded a DSc (London, 1968). To his credit, by his retirement, most of the world’s top chemists had engaged with the challenges and opportunities offered by the chemical synthesis and modification of carbohydrates.

Robin loved sport. He played for the school cricket team from age 14, was an East of Scotland doubles champion in tennis and sported a nose rearranged by rugby. He spent days burning to a crisp at the Basin Reserve watching New Zealand play test cricket, and later in life he took up golf, one of his few concessions to retirement.

Robin and Carolyn were unfailingly hospitable to visiting chemists and loved to entertain people from all over the world. They were also loyal and regular members of St John’s in the City Presbyterian Church; Robin became an Elder in 1974 and served as Session Clerk and on various committees throughout his life. He was also the Presbytery representative on the Board of Governors at Scot’s College for 13 years.

After his retirement from Victoria University in 1998, Robin entered what he referred to as his ‘supposed retirement’, working with the carbohydrate chemists at Industrial Research Ltd. Here he continued to foster the next generation of carbohydrate chemists in New Zealand – his ‘grandchildren’, instilling his rigorous approach to chemistry with mentoring and assistance with the group’s publications.

In August 2012, Robin celebrated his 80th birthday and retired a second time. Later that year, the Ferrier Trust was set up in his honour, to bring a superstar scientist to New Zealand each year, to engage with chemistry students and lecture. Peppi Prasit, a Ferrier PhD graduate and founder of Amira Pharmaceuticals and Inception Sciences in the US, was the trust’s foundation donor. Despite Robin’s failing health and memory, it was a delight to have him attend the inaugural Ferrier Lecture in March 2013.
