Gene editing for pest control

2019: Scenarios and summary paper exploring the potential uses of gene editing for pest control in Aotearoa.

To help consider the implications for pest control in New Zealand, this paper examines the potential impact of one particular use of gene editing—gene drives—and highlights three scenarios which raise specific considerations for three different types of pest:

  • wasps
  • possums
  • rats and stoats.

In particular, these case studies consider the range of scientific complexities of developing a gene drive for different organisms and the implications for the spread of animals with the gene drive to different countries.
