Interested in applying to become a Member Organisation?

We have three types of Organisational Members:

  • Branches
  • Constituent Organisations
  • Affiliate Organisations

Branches

Our Branches are distinct, separate regional organisations with close links with the Society, rather than “local branches” as such. The Branches are strong active societies, with their own local programmes of lectures, meetings and events. Some of these events are held in association with Royal Society Te Apārangi.

Members of each of the Branches are entitled to receive the rights of Friends of the Society for no additional charge. Information from the Society goes out to the nominated contacts for each Branch, but not to their Members directly, and the Society does not hold records of Members of the Branches. Members or Friends of the Society are not Members of a Branch unless they have joined that Branch directly.

We offer Branches a discount of at least 25% on commercial rates for venue hire of the meeting and conference facilities in our Thorndon, Wellington building (subject to availability).

If you are interested in running a local programme of events to support New Zealanders to explore, discover and share knowledge, you could consider becoming a Branch of Royal Society Te Apārangi. Your members would automatically become Friends of Royal Society Te Apārangi and we would support you by running occasional events in association with you.

To find out more about becoming a Branch of Royal Society Te Apārangi, please contact us by email membership@royalsociety.org.nz or phone (04) 472 7421 to discuss what would be involved.

Constituent Organisations

Constituent Organisations help the Society identify and address issues relevant to the research, knowledge and innovation sectors, and link into the research information and activities that the Society undertakes. Through membership of the Society, Constituent Organisations gain opportunities to further engage with the wider research community in New Zealand, and benefit from interaction with research-based organisations in other disciplines across science, technology and humanities.

Constituent Organisations are generally discipline-based, that is their members group through an interest in a particular discipline. Each Constituent Organisation is a voting member of the Society, and aligns to one of six discipline-based domains. They get to participate in the Discipline-based Forums, chaired by the respective domain Convenor of the Society’s Academy.

Members of a Constituent Organisation are not full individual Members of Royal Society Te Apārangi (and vice versa) – being a Member of one doesn’t entitle you to the benefits of being a Member of the other. Information from the Society goes out to the nominated contacts for each Constituent Organisation, but not to their Members directly, and the Society does not hold records of Members of the Constituent Organisations.

We offer Constituent Organisations Opportunity one free daytime session per year of room hire in Te Whare Apārangi (subject to conditions).  We also offer a discount, on commercial rates for venue hire of the meeting and conference facilities in our Thorndon, Wellington building (subject to availability).
