Name: Angela Scott

School: Ormond School

Programme: ‘Exploring the nature of science through horticultural trusts and organisations within Te Tairāwhiti’

Region: Gisborne

Host: Wi Pere and Women’s Native Tree Project Trust

Ormond School’s ultimate goal is to inspire students to develop a deep appreciation for science, fostering a sense of wonder about the natural world and the universe.  Ormond School strives to elevate science engagement throughout the school community and establish fruitful connections with local industries and iwi.  Learners will become innovative problem solvers and think about sustainability, engage in global issues that have an impact on our environment and region, and develop a sense of kaitiakitanga – guardianship to protect our whenua and native species.  Participating in the Science Teaching Leadership Programme will add to Ormond School’s current science professional development and foster sustained and effective science teaching across our school.

Angela has had 12 years primary teaching experience.  She has had the opportunity to teach a broad range of year levels, abilities and cultural backgrounds from a range of rural and town schools.  She has a background in science, having studied animal technology and agriculture and a passion for being out in nature.  Angela loves to share this passion with her learners and believes that science in the classroom can lead to engaging learning that benefits all areas of the curriculum.

Angela’s placement involves her participation in the research and activities conducted by the Women’s Native Tree Project Trust and Wi Pere Orchard.  At these two organisations Angela will be involved with seed collection, seed propagation, germination and transplanting of mature seedlings.  She will participate in a range of projects based around exploring the most suitable propagation techniques, growing spaces and permanent planting positions in order for the seedlings to survive.  This includes opportunities to collaborate with others in the industry as well as teaching and learning by working with students and teachers involved in the Enviroschools and Garden to Table programmes.

On completion of this placement, Angela aims to have a firm foundation of knowledge and understanding of the Nature of Science, native tree production and the importance of these trees in native ecosystems, and practical and theoretical skills around fruit tree plant production, improvement and food production.
