Beneath the Māori Moon traces the origins of the team and the stories behind the team through the decades. Mulholland (Ngāti Kahungngu) includes analysis of the politics behind the side, controversies involving the team and individual players as well as moments of historic triumphs. The book also details the Māori response to the system of apartheid sport in South Africa.

Beneath the Māori Moon includes unique photographs, memorabilia, cartoons, statistics and player interviews.
