Read about the Nelson Branch of the Royal Society Te Apārangi
Formed: May 1841 (as the Literary and Scientific Institution of Nelson)
Known founding members: Captain Arthur Wakefield and crew of the New Zealand Company’s ships, the Whitby and the Mary Ann.
The origins of this Branch pre-dates Nelson itself by some five months - the first meeting of the Institute was held on board Whitby in May 1841, and the settlement of Nelson was decided that October.
As well as promoting science locally, regionally and nationally, the Nelson Science Society also has a separate astronomy section with its own programme of events.
