Students selected to attend Harry Messel International Science School, Sydney

The International Science School (ISS2017) is a biennial science school that celebrate and honours excellence in young people displaying a passion and aptitude for science, and aims to encourage these students to pursue careers in science and related areas.

It is a two-week residential science camp which will include a range of activities including lectures by renowned scientists, hands-on scientific workshops and an active social program.  Joining the six New Zealand students will be another 140 students selected to attend from Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

The theme of the ISS2017 is Future Power.Among those that are presenting are Nobel laureates and eminent scientists.  Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, a well known Australian science communicator and populariser who is best known as an author and science commentator on Australian radio and television, is one scientist who will be lecturing to the students as well as other scientists from the United Kingdom and the USA.

Most of the student’s costs are being supported by the Talented School Students Travel Award, managed by Royal Society Te Apārangi and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. This fund is aimed specifically at high achieving science students who have been selected to attend international science events.
