The New Zealand Journal of Zoology seeks new Associate Editors

The New Zealand Journal of Zoology (NZJZ) is seeking dynamic and internationally engaged researchers to join our editorial team as Associate Editors. In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the journal's sustainable growth by enhancing its global reach and supporting impactful zoological research.

NZJZ publishes high-quality papers covering all aspects of zoology relevant to the Southern Hemisphere, the Pacific Rim, and Antarctica, to shape and advance research in these regions. Our scope includes, but is not limited to, conservation biology, ecology, taxonomy, physiology, pathology, behaviour, genetics, and pest control.

As an official journal of Royal Society Te Apārangi, published in partnership with Taylor & Francis, we are expanding our editorial board to strengthen the journal’s international presence and increase its global impact. We are now actively seeking Associate Editors from the global research community to join us in this effort.

Candidates should be active, publishing researchers with strong professional networks within their home country and beyond. We are committed to building an editorial board that reflects the diversity of the global zoological research community, and we welcome candidates at any career stage, whose research interests align with the journal's aims and scope. We particularly encourage applications from researchers based in Global South countries.

  • Contributing at least one paper for publication during each term of your service.
  • Attracting new authors and submissions from your research areas and geographic regions.
  • Advising on journal policy and scope.
  • Acting as an advisor in cases of complex publishing ethics discussions when necessary.
  • Promoting the journal to peers and colleagues and representing the journal at conferences.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications (considered in relation to career stage).
  • A well-established network of contacts within relevant fields, both regionally and internationally.
  • Research experience in relevant fields, with a doctorate degree.
  • Interest in digital communication and publishing trends.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation abilities.
  • The ability to assess the novelty, context, and implications of research across diverse areas of the discipline.
  • A willingness to engage with researchers, learn about their work, and introduce them to the journal. The ability to collaborate effectively with fellow editors of the journal.

Term and Remuneration:

The first term of appointment will be 2 years, renewable thereafter to another 2 years under mutual agreement.

Associate Editors receive an honorarium for each manuscript handled.

How to apply:

Applicants should submit a two page-CV and a one-page cover letter describing why you are interested in the job and how your skills, knowledge, and background would contribute to the journal.

Please send your application by email to Publish@royalsociety.org.nz.

The editorial team is committed to advancing gender equality and promoting diversity.

Closing date:

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until 31 October 2024; therefore early applications are encouraged. We regret that only successful candidates will be contacted by the Editorial team.
