A widespread outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) hit Britain in the first half of 2001 and massive resources were assigned to eradicate the highly infectious disease.

Over two million animals have been slaughtered and there has been considerable disruption to a range economic activities, not just agriculture.

What is FMD, how did this outbreak develop, what have been its impacts and why is this of concern to New Zealand?
