An outcome of the VII Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Biology Symposium held in Christchurch in 1998 was the establishment of the SCAR Biology Student Travel Award Scheme, set up specifically to help postgraduate students registered at New Zealand institutions to attend SCAR Biology Symposium. The award is administered by a group of executors set up under the auspices of the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Committee on Antarctic Science.
Applications are invited from post-graduate students registered at a New Zealand Tertiary Institution and pursuing biological research in Antarctica and/or the Southern Ocean. Priority will be given to students who intend to present a paper at the symposium. Only New Zealand citizens or residents are eligible to apply. The value of each award shall be decided by the Selection Committee. The awards will cover the full cost of an economy return airfare (New Zealand-Belgium) and the full cost of the registration fee. Accommodation and food costs will not be covered.
