Despite rapid advances in DNA sequencing technology, obtaining accurate whole genome sequence can still be too expensive. Costs can be reduced by sequencing a subset of the genome and sacrificing accuracy. Statistical methods have been developed to allow such data to be used for relatedness estimation, enabling many applications.
