NZJGG First Paper Award

The New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics (NZJGG) is pleased to announce the inaugural NZJGG First Paper Award to recognise and celebrate excellence among global researchers as they launch their research careers.

Students from around the world whose first NZJGG paper is accepted for publication, while serving as the corresponding author, will be eligible. You are welcome to include co-authors on your paper. Articles will undergo evaluation for scientific excellence by the editorial panel and are subject to the usual peer-review process. Up to ten awards will be presented each year on a first-come, first-served basis, with an immediate start.

The award

In addition to the recognition from the research community, the award carries a NZ$200 prize, and your work will be highlighted on social media of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.

How to Participate

Simply respond to the relevant question in the journal portal when you submit your manuscript and add a statement to the cover letter accompanying your submission to explain how you:

  • meet the eligibility criteria (see below; enrollment status and university/institution);
  • and that, if accepted, the article would be your first paper published in NZJGG.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the award, all the following criteria must be met:

  • At the time of first submission, the student must be enrolled at a university or a research institution anywhere in the world. Undergraduate, Honours, Masters, and PhD students are all encouraged to participate.
  • The student has not previously published an article in NZJGG.
  • The student serves as the corresponding author.
  • Only original research papers and review articles are eligible.
  • The manuscript is accepted for publication following the full peer review process.
