Gene technology
Over the last few decades, gene technology has been used to advance medicine, agriculture, conservation, and more. This is a rapidly changing field: new techniques like CRISPR are opening more doors for innovation but also raising concern about the ethics of gene technology.
Royal Society Te Apārangi previously convened a multidisciplinary panel to consider the social, cultural, and economic implications of gene editing (a subset of gene technology) in Aotearoa New Zealand, incorporating Māori perspectives and broader cultural contexts. This collaboration led to the publication of a series of reports, which remain a useful resource on the topic
We are currently preparing a series of outputs to help the general public gain a greater understanding around and be able to have informed conversations about gene technologies and their applications in Aotearoa New Zealand.
