2012 Pickering Medal

Professor David Williams

The Pickering Medal to recognise excellence and innovation in the practical field of technology was awarded in 2012 to Professor David Edward Williams FRSNZ of the University of Auckland, for his contribution to the development of biomedical and gas sensors which have been commercialised.

Professor David Williams is a prominent international electrochemist who has been in the forefront of the development of metal oxide based gas sensors.  These devices have been commercialised through several spin-out companies which Professor Williams has led, most recently Aeroqual, an Auckland-based company who are the world’s largest manufacturer of hand-held and networked ozone sensors. The company also manufactures sensors for other reactive gases and sensor array cabinets for the real-time monitoring of urban air quality.  The company has now distributed its New Zealand-made technology through 53 countries.
