2024: Dr Ying Wang of Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland will investigate how to enhance cultural competency for working with Asian learners in schools in Aotearoa New Zealand
Ethnic diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand is steadily growing which highlights the need for culturally sensitive educational environments. Despite Asian students making up a significant portion of the student population, resources to support their needs are lacking. Dr Wang’s research will examine current policies and practices to understand specific barriers, needs, and enablers for working with Asian learners. Dr Wang will gather nuanced perspectives from students, whānau and educators and codesign resources and training to enhance cultural competency and help empower schools to better work with Asian learners. Ultimately, this study aims to create learning environments for young people where learners from all cultures are supported, ancestral and Indigenous knowledge is respected, and a strong foundation of belonging is facilitated.
