Neil Birrell
2024: Dr Neil Birrell of Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland aims to discover the best evidence-based approaches to conservation by studying the unique insect fauna of Aotearoa New Zealand
Anagotus weevils are a group of giant flightless beetles endemic to this country. Some species of Anagotus have only survived on offshore islands while others are found more widely. This makes these beetles a perfect model system for to assessing how insect lineages cope with a changing environment and how best to ensure that they survive. Dr Birrell will determine the ecological processes and population dynamics that determine the geographical range where different species of large flightless beetles are found. Findings from this study will guide the conservation efforts for insects in Aotearoa New Zealand and worldwide.
