2024: Dr Farha Ramzan of Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland will study the anti-inflammatory effects of kawakawa leaves for obesity treatment
For Māori, kawakawa (Piper excelsum) is a tāonga valued resource that is used in rongoā traditional treatments for various diseases. Dr Ramzan will investigate whether this mātauranga Māori knowledge can be applied to obesity, which is commonly associated with chronic inflammation. Building on previous research demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effects of kawakawa in healthy human volunteers, Dr Ramzan will collaborate with Māori communities and expert rongoā practitioners to develop a culturally responsive dietary intervention. By integrating research with mātauranga and cultural practices, this research aims to develop dietary solutions for a growing global health concern.
