2024: Dr Eileen Joy of Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland studies the evidence that underlies policy decisions on social wellbeing in Aotearoa New Zealand

Any policy will reflect the framing of the problem and the information it was based on. Given the limited research infrastructure in Aotearoa New Zealand, decision-makers rely heavily on overseas studies that do not reflect the diversity, specific needs, and knowledge systems of our population. Dr Joy will address this knowledge-gap by examining how policymakers access and evaluate evidence and what their criteria for credibility and relevance are. The project will also have a focus on the uptake of mātauranga Māori in policy development and on the potential for mis- and disinformation, including the use of generative artificial intelligence, to influence decision-making. The study will enable policy development that benefits all New Zealanders in a time when new technologies challenge democratic processes.
