Thomas James

Thomas James from Christchurch whose interests vary from scuba diving, snowboarding and rock climbing to science has been selected to attend the Asia Science Camp in China this July.
I am a Year 12 student at Burnside High School in Christchurch. I feel extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to attend the Asia Science Camp in Shantou, China this year.
I enjoy problem-solving and applying scientific principles to the problems I see in everyday life. I like trying to create solutions which will benefit others. I am inspired by what other people have been able to achieve by thinking creatively to overcome challenges and find a new way of doing things. I am really looking forward to getting to know and being inspired by all those I meet at the Asia Science Camp.
I like a challenge and enjoy spending time in outdoor pursuits, I scuba dive, mountain bike, hike, rock climb and snowboard as well as compete in: triathlon, Rogaine and orienteering events. I am passionate about encouraging others to extend themselves by trying new things in the outdoors and in applying science and technology to projects to help others in the community.
I would like to study engineering at university as I’d like to continue to develop the skills I have to find new ways of helping others. I am very grateful to the Royal Society Te Aparangi for the opportunity I have been given and I look forward to using it to help and inspire others.
