Sam Couper
Sam Couper from Otago whose passion for science comes from ideas of what could still be discovered has been selected to attend the Asia Science Camp in Shantou, China in July 2019.
I am a year 13 student at Otago Girls’ High School. I feel very privileged to have been selected to attend the Asia Science Camp in Shantou, China later this year.
At school, I take physics, chemistry, biology, calculus and statistics. I am very passionate about all areas of science and maths, especially physics. My passion comes from the unlimited potential of science. I am endlessly fascinated by how much we know about our world and what’s in it, yet there is still so much more to be discovered. This is what motivates me to pursue a future in science, more specifically, engineering.
I am very involved in all aspects of school and this year, I am the Academic Prefect. As part of my role, I lead the peer tutoring programme which involves year 13 students mentoring other students with their school work. I have also developed a forum website where students can post questions, receive help and assist others. Playing sport is another passion of mine. I play in the badminton and tennis A teams at my school and also represent Otago in badminton as well. I am significantly involved in the Amnesty International group and am the co-captain for badminton.
I am very excited to attend the Asia Science Camp because although it will push me out of my comfort zone, the prospect of engaging with like-minded thinkers excites me. It will enable me to further explore the areas of science I am passionate about. This invaluable experience will assist me to build a career where I can contribute to the future of New Zealand and the many challenges we face through my passion for science. Thank you to both the Royal Society Te Apārangi and the TSSTA for making this possible. As a result, we will be able to collaborate, now and in the future, to create positive solutions to global issues.
