Jemma Henneveld
Jemma is a Year 13 student at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Wellington. She is looking forward to travelling to the Asia Science Camp in August and meeting Nobel Laureates.
Hello, my name is Jemma and I’m in my last year of high school at Samuel Marsden. I was born in Wellington and have lived here my whole life. The science trip that I am lucky enough to be attending is the Asian Science Camp that will be taking place in Guangdong, China, this year. I am very excited to go to China as it’s a place I’ve always wanted to go to and I’m looking forward to being immersed in the culture, along with five other New Zealand students.
At school, I take biology, physics, chemistry, geography and English, having completed calculus last year. I hope to go down a career path that combines as many of these subjects as possible. I’m not sure what university holds for me, though I am looking into studying a science-related subject next year with either a humanitarian or environmental underpinning. I have always really loved science as I love knowing how things work, and I’m always curious to discover more. I also really love how a science career holds a very wide range of amazing opportunities and challenges, enough to keep someone busy for a lifetime!
I like to stay busy and participate in a range of activities at school including choir, musical productions, badminton, debate coaching, and tutoring. I also have been playing tennis and piano from a young age. Outside of school, amongst other hobbies, I love to read, op-shop, and go tramping or camping. Most of the tramps I have completed in the past few years were to do with the Duke of Edinburgh programme which has taken me to a lot of stunning and special places in our beautiful country. I love to look at new ways to challenge myself; this year one of the biggest challenges I completed was walking the nine-day trek to and from Annapurna base camp in Nepal. I also really love to meet new people and I’m looking forward to the Asian Science Camp providing a fun and interesting environment to do so.
I am so very grateful to be able to attend this camp and I would like to say a huge thank you to Royal Society Te Apārangi for the amazing opportunity and support. I absolutely cannot wait for this trip and am already counting down the days!
