Hannah Konings
Hannah Konings, a year 13 student from Timaru who has a passion for science and music has been selected to attend the XLAB in Gottingen, Germany this August.
Guten Tag! My name is Hannah Konings and I am currently a year 13 at Timaru Girls’ High School. I’m very excited to be one of two students from New Zealand selected by the Royal Society Te Apārangi to be attending XLAB in Gottingen, Germany this August. Currently, I am studying chemistry, physics, calculus, geography and music. While I enjoy all of my subjects, I have a particular interest in chemistry, physics, calculus, and the environment. Next year I hope to study one of these subjects at university. While I am currently unsure as to which one, I hope that this amazing programme will help with my decision. I aspire to be able to use my love for science to provide a better future for the coming generations.
Throughout my childhood, I have always wanted to travel and see the world. I studied the German language for four years throughout high school. From this study I was able to go on exchange to Germany this past summer, experiencing the amazing culture and food. I am so thankful to be able to have this opportunity to go back so soon to a place I have come to love.
While I have a passion for science and hope to pursue this in the future, I am also involved in many other areas within my school and the local community, particularly in music. I recently competed in the New Zealand Chamber Music competition and The Big Sing. I also play in our local youth orchestra and tutor flute to primary school students. I also enjoy playing badminton, swimming and rock climbing.
I am a firm believer in getting involved is as much as you can, and setting a good example for those younger than yourself. At school, I am the head of our science committee, where we organise events which enable our students to experience the fun side of science outside of the classroom curriculum-based learning. Through this, we hope to spark a love of and curiosity for science so these students continue their studies in science.
I look forward to travelling overseas and participating in this amazing programme and meeting like-minded others from around the world.
