Background to the Study Award
Ngaire Bennie, representing the Association of Social Science Research (ASSR), approached the Royal Society of New Zealand about setting up an award in the memory of the late Raewyn Good. The ASSR agreed to contribute money for the establishment.
Raewyn was an activist and a researcher in the social sciences. Raewyn was also active in the Royal Society Council and was an integral member of the RSNZ’s Social Sciences Advisory Committee. In addition to being a strong advocate for social science research, its development and its contribution to social policy and society, Raewyn has also been described as an anthropologist, a social researcher, a policy analyst, a community activist, a mentor for emerging social science researchers, and a supporter of community organisations.
Raewyn exemplified values such as social and cultural inclusiveness, the pursuit of excellence and innovation in research. She championed social justice and community wellbeing and, in particular, sought to give voice to the disadvantaged and marginalised in society. She was an exceptional networker, making connections between the community, officialdom and the social sciences.
Raewyn Good was an active member of the Association of Social Science Research (ASSR) for many years and ASSR Convenor from 1996 until her death in 2008.
