Information about the Falling Walls Foundation and the Falling Walls Lab Finale
The Falling Walls Foundation is a non-profit organisation in Berlin, dedicated to the support of science and the humanities. It was established in 2009, 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. At its heart is the question ‘Which are the next walls to fall?’ as a result of scientific, technological, economic and sociological breakthroughs. The Foundation is generously supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Helmholtz Association, the Berlin Senate and numerous other acclaimed academic institutions, foundations, companies, non-governmental organisations and prominent individuals.
Each year, the Foundation supports scientific organisation worldwide to host a Falling Walls Lab. This international forum promotes interdisciplinary connections between excellent aspiring academics, innovators, entrepreneurs, investors and professionals . In 3-minute talks, outstanding talents and innovative thinkers share their research projects, business models and social initiatives with an interdisciplinary audience and jury, who selects the most innovative and promising idea. The winner of each locally hosted Falling Walls Labs travel to the Lab Finale in Berlin, Germany on 8 November. 100 Finalists present their work in front of a distinguished jury and showcase their solutions for today's pressing challenges. All finalists additionally win a ticket to attend the Falling Walls Conference where they meet the world's movers and shakers of science, business, and policy-making. Among the speakers are Novel laureates, artists, heads of state and government. The three winners of the Lab Finale in Berlin are awarded the "Falling Walls Young Innovator of the Year" title, prize money, and get to pitch their idea once again on the grand stage of the Falling Walls Conference.
Since 2009, there have been over 80 international Labs from close to 50 countries worldwide with over 1,000 participants. Six hundred outstanding talents have participated in the annual Falling Walls Lab Finales from 2014 to 2017.
