How to photograph the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) with Dr Ian Griffin CRSNZ

Have you ever wondered how people take amazing photos of the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights when it’s hardly visible to the human eye?

Hear from Aurora enthusiast Dr Ian Griffin CRSNZ, on how to capture the Aurora.

Learn Ian’s tips and tricks on:

  • how to find out if an Aurora is forecast
  • where some of the best spots to see it are
  • how to set up your phone or camera.

The best time to see the southern lights or Aurora Australis in New Zealand is from March to September, when the night sky stays dark for longer.

The further south you are – closer to the South Pole – the better chance you’ll have at capturing the impressive natural light show.

To the eye, you should see the Aurora low in the south as a “gently glowing cloud”, Ian explains.

The sky will shine with pink, red, green and even purple moving curtains of light.

“Even if you don’t see an Aurora, a night under the stars is something you’ll remember forever.”
