The challenge of achieving sustainable tourism in an age of 'overtourism'

Reports from Europe of protests about the impacts of tourism in places ranging from Amsterdam to Venice and Barcelona have led to claims that globally, 'overtourism' has become a major concern.

Tucked away in the South Pacific, Aotearoa New Zealand is not immune to these concerns: freedom campers place pressure on public infrastructure and cause waste management issues, the impacts of cruise tourism in Wellington and Akaroa harbours are being debated, and crowding occurs around some of our popular natural attractions, from Hot Water Beach to the Tongariro Crossing.

In this presentation Professor Regina Scheyvens (Massey University) considers whether guidance for a more sustainable pathway forward for tourism can be found through the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, agreed to by 193 countries, which are guiding global development through to 2030.

Inspiration will be drawn from a conference on Tourism and the SDGs recently held at Massey's Albany campus, and attended by a wide range of academics, industry players, government and NGO interests.
