Branch Event: Tikanga & Technology – Māori views on Genomic Research

Tuesday 15 August | Waikato

Waikato Branch of the Royal Society Te Apārangi presents Associate Professor Maui Hudson as the sixth speaker in their Lunchtime Lecture Series, Adjusting Life's Fundamentals: Genome Methods for New Zealand.

Abstract

In New Zealand there is a move towards proactively addressing the cultural implications associated with storing Māori biospecimens and their use in genomic research.  The recent Te Mata Ira research project explored Maori views on biobanking and genomic research identified ways to make processes of genetic and genomic research more culturally appropriate and highlighted the importance of Māori governance over Māori biospecimens and data.  This presentation will outline the development of the Te Mata Ira Guidelines for Genomic Research with Maori, and the He Tangata Kei Tua Guidelines for Biobanking with Maori Tissue. The presentation will also give examples of efforts to implement these guidelines in New Zealand and overseas.
