Branch event: Root and branch

21 November Palmerston North: The 'reinvention' of the Royal Society Te Apārangi with historian John E. Martin.

Following the AGM, we will be joined by John Martin, author of ‘Illuminating Our World’ a history of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, for a presentation of the past, and a discussion of the future, of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and the Branches, particularly the Manawatu Branch.

John writes, ‘in completing the history of the Royal Society for its 150th anniversary this year, I have had the opportunity to reflect upon the changes experienced through its 150 years. These changes have been very radical – they have changed the organisation ‘root and branch’. The Society’s branches have been an integral part of this process – from the reconstitution of the NZ Institute in 1903 into a more democratic structure; to the fundamental reorganisation in the 1960s to make it an Academy and extend its base beyond the branches; and to the reforms of the 1990s that introduced a greater extent of representation and began to broaden the remit of the organisation to the social sciences. This process continues, with the recent inclusion of the humanities into the Society in a world in which science is a part of a wider matrix of knowledge imbedded in societies. These changes present a challenge to the Society’s branches, as they do more generally to the traditional conception of the place of science within the corpus of knowledge and within our contemporary society.’

Come along for a discussion of the past, present and future of the Royal Society Te Apārangi and the Manawatu Branch.

All welcome.
